Liang Sicheng, the father of modern Chinese architecture, was born on April 20, 1901, and graduated from the Higher Division of the Tsinghua School in 1923. He went to the United States to study architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1924 and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1927. Soon after, he studied architectural history at Harvard University. After returning to China, he was appointed as a professor at Tsinghua University and founded the first department of architecture in the history of modern education in China, which achieved a great historical change from scratch in Chinese architecture history. After the CCP seized power, Mr. Liang’s experience in the United States and the experience in the Kuomintang party controlling period, especially when he protected the cultural-historical ancient buildings, and he had a violent conflict with the CCP officials. Finally, he was tortured to death.
