Britain’s warning ahead of NATO summit: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shows the world needs to be extra vigilant and cautious about the potential threat that Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will take action against Taiwan.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who was attending a NATO meeting in Madrid with the British prime minister said it clearly that she called for faster action to provide defensive weapons to Taiwan. This is vital since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“We’ve seen this prior to the Ukraine war – there’s always a tendency of wishful thinking, to hope that more bad things won’t happen and to wait until it’s too late,” The Foreign Secretary told the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee and her words went well beyond the government’s standard language on the issue.

We should have done things earlier, we should have been supplying the defensive weapons into Ukraine earlier. We need to learn that lesson for Taiwan. Every piece of equipment we have sent takes months of training, so the sooner we do it, the better.”

The prime minister made his point when Johnson was asked by reporters on a plane from the G7 summit in southern Germany to Madrid whether Taiwan needed more support.

Johnson has been cautious about referring directly to Communist China, but on Monday, in comments that compared the need to support Ukraine to World War II, he said the impact of allowing Russia to win “will be felt in East Asia as well.”

Taiwan has been self-governing since the CCP took control of China in 1949 and nationalist forces fled to Taiwan. Beijing considers Taiwan a rebellious province and has often threatened to take it back by force.

At the House of Commons hearing, Truss also promised MPs that she would present an independent foreign policy strategy on relations with Communist China.
