Prior to a NATO summit, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced several measures in response to an “era of strategic competition” posed by Communist China and Russia, including an increase in the high readiness capabilities of NATO’s Rapid Response Force and expansion of the troops from the current 40,000 to more than 300,000.
Stoltenberg said the expanded force would reside in allies in need of defense support. They would participate in military training in host countries to familiarize themselves with the terrain and facilities needed to respond quickly in conflicts if necessary.
In addition, the size of forces deployed in the alliance at NATO’s eastern flank will be boosted to brigade level with 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers, which is the most significant overhaul of NATO’s collective defense and deterrence since the Cold War, according to Stoltenberg.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Stoltenberg said, the authorities’ decision to abandon dialogue and cooperation has forced NATO to adjust its strategic concept to treat Russia as the greatest threat to security and the international order. Moreover, the new strategic concept also incorporates Communist China for the first time to emphasize that the CCP has already posed a systemic challenge to NATO’s security, interests, and values.
