North Korea commemorates the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea condemned Washington and Seoul’s “aggressive move” on Saturday, vowing to retaliate.

South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol and U.S. President Joe Biden agreed in May to deploy more U.S. weapons if necessary to deter North Korea amid concerns that the country may be preparing to conduct a nuclear test.

North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said on Saturday that several workers’ organizations held meetings to blame the United States for the 1950-1953 Korean War, vowing revenge on U.S. imperialism.

The war ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, meaning that U.S.-led U.N. forces are still technically at war with North Korea.

According to KCNA, Pyongyang condemned Washington’s so-called “aggressive actions” against South Korea and Japan. Pyongyang also accused the U.S. of promoting the deployment of “strategic assets” in South Korea to provoke another war. Strategic assets can typically include aircraft carriers, long-range bombers, or missile submarines.

KCNA said such insolent behavior of the U.S. incited the anger and retaliation of the Korean people.

As Seoul commemorates the anniversary of the war, Yoon Seok-yeol pledges to do his utmost to protect freedom and peace.
