According to a recent report, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) may have launched information operations in the last Canadian federal election, aimed to discourage Canadians of Chinese heritage from voting for the Conservatives.
The CCP’s Global Times published two negative articles about the Conservative Party on September 8 last year, which quickly spread among Canadian users of the WeChat platform. And many of the comments of the articles slandered the Conservative Party. At the same time, another Chinese social media platform Douyin has also begun to spread a narrative widely that the Conservatives would all but sever diplomatic relations with Beijing.
In this regard, Rapid Response Mechanism Canada recently analyzed data on foreign interference. It manually reviewed some Chinese social media platforms, including WeChat, Douyin, and Weibo. The result showed that the CCP disrupted last year’s federal election by spreading disinformation. The move destroyed Canada’s democratic process and became one of the reasons for the Conservative Party’s loss.
