The European Union on Saturday (Feb. 13) called on Beijing to lift its ban on the BBC World News television channel, the Epoch Times reported on Feb. 14. The CCP banned the BBC from landing in China, apparently in retaliation for Britain’s revocation of the license of CGTN, the CCP’s overseas CCTV station, and the loss of the British license led to a major setback for CGTN’s overseas expansion.

In a statement, the EU said Beijing’s move further restricts “freedom of expression and access to information on its territory” and violates the Chinese Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Radio Hong Kong will also stop broadcasting the BBC, which the EU says is a further erosion of rights and freedoms following the implementation of the “national security law” in Hong Kong last June, and an example of the erosion of “one country, two systems”.

The EU statement said, “The EU remains firmly committed to upholding media freedom and pluralism and protecting the right to freedom of expression online and offline, including the freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information without interference of any kind.”

Although the UK is no longer a member of the EU, it remains a member of the European Commission, which oversees the agreement on broadcasting licenses established in 1989.

The EU statement follows criticism of the Chinese Communist Party by British, American and foreign journalists in China in response to Beijing’s imposition of a ban on the BBC.
