A sudden military coup on 1 February led to the arrest of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and more than 100 members of parliament. The military claimed that the reason for the coup was the fraudulent general elections held at the end of last year, and that the commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Defence Force, Min Aung Hlaing, would take over power. Myanmar enters a year-long state of emergency until the next elections are held.

While people were in disbelief, it soon became clear that the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) was behind the coup. Shortly before the coup, the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Myanmar on January 12 this year, and called the military chief Min Aung Hlaing a brother. It is believed that the coup was closely linked to the CCP.

The CCP planned this coup for several purposes.

Firstly, to humiliate the Biden administration by claiming there was election fraud in Burma, making it difficult for the Biden Administration to claim the moral high ground given their own fraud in the US.

Secondly, the CCP is using the coup in Burma as a new dilemma to test the Biden administration’s foreign policy. Choosing to repudiating the military or acquiescing to the military coup would put the US in a dilemma. If there is only a reprimand but no action, it indicates that US influence is weak in the Asia Pacific area. If sanctions are imposed, Japanese and Western investment in Burma is going to go dry up. If important allies in Asia do not participate in sanctions, it means that the Biden administration’s policy of multilateralism in Asia has failed

Third, the CCP is using Myanmar as yet another pawn to try to serve as an opportunity for dialogue internationally, especially with the Biden administration.

Fourthly, it forces some Japanese and Western entrepreneurs, with investments in Burma, to negotiate with the Burmese military to obtain appropriate protection. In this way, those companies that have succumbed to the CCP can continue to grow and it allow those entrepreneurs to influence the policies of their respective countries.

Fifth, the CCP’s senior officials’ families, who are secretly protecting the Burmese military, receive benefits in exchange for Burma’s resources.

Burmese people protested the coup by banging pots and beating sirens. Local residents explained that in Burmese culture, beating the drum means to ward off evil spirits. It said there are also at least 20 hospitals where health care workers are preparing to go on strike.

The people of Myanmar have suffered from a long history of military rule. In 2010, the military government was ended and a democratic process was initiated, with elections and free market. Now that a military dictatorship has once again emerged, the people are bound to oppose it. At the same time, the black hand of the CCP has further opened the eyes of the people of the world to the evil nature of the CCP, which will awaken more people and united them to take down the CCP.
