On May 26, local time, the incoming Philippine President-elect Marcos Jr. promised at the end of June that he would uphold the rulings of international law and would not allow China to trample on the Philippines’ maritime rights and interests.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, the Netherlands, ruled in July 2016 that China’s “nine-dash line” claim in the South China Sea has no effect under international law. Within the 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Philippines, only the Philippines has the right to use natural resources.

The CCP has ignored the ruling of the International Court of Arbitration and has repeatedly colluded with the Philippines for its economic interests. Outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte put the ruling on hold in exchange for trade and investment promises.

Marcos said: “We have a very important arbitration in our favor, and we will continue to maintain our territorial rights with this. Not a single cent of our offshore maritime rights will be trampled on”.

This is Marcos’ strongest comment to date on this sensitive issue. He stressed that the Philippines will always have a firm voice in dialogue with China.
