On May 22nd, the World Health Assembly (WHA) convened. Following the rejection of the proposal to “invite Taiwan to participate in the WHA as an observer” by the General Assembly on May 23rd, ten countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, and Australia, expressed solidarity with Taiwan, emphasising the importance of Taiwan’s participation.

Taiwan’s admission as an observer is vetoed by the WHA.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that 71 friendly countries back Taiwan’s participation and reject the CCP’s aggression.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ou Jiangan, reported on the 23rd that the WHA met on Sunday. On the first two days of the meeting, the General Affairs Committee and the plenary meeting debated whether to include the proposal of “inviting Taiwan to participate in the WHA as an observer” submitted by Taiwan’s 13 friendly countries in the agenda, and ultimately opted not to include it. The Foreign Ministry expressed serious regret and dissatisfaction with the outcome.

Ten countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, and Australia, have expressed support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHA.

Ou Jiangan remarked, “On the 23rd, there were representatives from eight countries with similar ideas, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Canada, Luxembourg, and Lithuania, as well as two friends from Guatemala and Paraguay who spoke out for my country and affirmed Taiwan. We urge the WHO to accept Taiwan’s participation as a steadfast partner in the global fight against the pandemic.” The Foreign Ministry expressed his heartfelt gratitude.

“For Taiwan, an important partner committed to global health, the U.S. deeply regrets not being able to participate in the WHA as an observer,” said Loyce Pace, Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The US government is convinced that combating the coronavirus pandemic, as well as preventing and responding to potential future public health crises, will necessitate strong global collaboration.”

According to British Health Secretary Sajid Javid, excluding Taiwan from becoming a WHA observer has no basis in public health consideration, especially since Taiwan has played a role in sharing information with the rest of the world since the outbreak’s inception.

While French Minister of Health Jerome Salomon, German Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach, Canadian Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos, Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly, Lithuanian Minister of Health Arūnas Dulkys, Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Paulette LENERT, and Taiwan-friendly Paraguay Health Minister Julio Cesar Borba have all stated that equality and solidarity, which are core concepts for countries, should be ensured, All countries, without exception, should be admitted to the United Nations system, including Taiwan, which has long been the country that practises its commitment to global public health under the principle of universality.

According to Ou Jiangan, the CCP claims that many countries support the “One China Principle” and oppose Taiwan’s membership in the WHA. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the CCP government repeated its “One China Principle” and other clichés, deliberately misinterpreted the UN General Assembly’s 2758th Resolution No. 25.1 and WHA Resolution No. 25.1, and brought its so-called “One China Principle” into the hall of WHO that promotes global health. While claiming to be concerned about Taiwanese people’s health and well-being, they do everything they can to prevent Taiwan from participating in the WHO and WHA, even smearing Taiwan’s contribution to global epidemic prevention with the political language of “seeking independence through the epidemic.”

According to Ou Jiang’an, the CCP’s actions demonstrate the evil nature of the CCP’s use of politics over people’s health and disregard for people’s well-being. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges the CCP government to take responsibility for the health and safety of all people and to stop ignoring the international community’s strong voice in support of Taiwan’s participation in global epidemic prevention cooperation.
