Tank commander Vadim Shishimarin, 21, admitted to killing Oleksandr Shelipov, 62, in the village of Chupakhivka in northeastern Ukraine on February 28. He admitted that he had violated the provisions of the Ukrainian penal code, and the laws and regulations of war. The soldier was a member of the tank unit before he was captured, and in view of the crimes he committed against peace, security, humanity and the international legal order, the court sentenced him to life in prison. The verdict ended days of litigation in a Kyiv court and could serve as a model for atrocities committed by Russian troops during the aggression.

Wearing a blue and grey hooded sweatshirt, the young offender Shishimarin watched the trial quietly from a reinforced glass box in the courtroom during the trial, and showed no emotion when the verdict was read, standing with his head down and listening to the translation. His lawyer, Viktor Ovsyannikov, said he was not surprised by the verdict, but believed it was due to “some pressure from society” and indicated he would appeal.

The case has drawn international attention amid growing allegations of war crimes committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, some of which have been documented by international human rights groups. Ukraine has launched massive charges to try to prosecute war crimes on its territory, while independent investigations by the International Criminal Court and the United Nations have also been launched. The trial has enormous symbolic significance for Ukraine.
