North Korea confirmed its first official Covid infections on Thursday, prompting a strict nationwide lockdown in the reclusive communist country.
State media reported the detection of a “highly transmissible subvariant of the Omicron virus” and an outbreak of Covid in Pyongyang, without specifying the number of cases or possible sources of infection.
The official KCNA news agency KCNA said leader Kim Jong Un vowed to extinguish the outbreak, quoted as calling it “the biggest emergency” thanks to “a hole in our emergency quarantine front”.
Outside observers say that residents were ordered to return home and stay indoors days before the announcement and the lack of a sophisticated healthcare system in the impoverished country is likely to leave the nation’s 25 million population extremely vulnerable to Covid.
