According to Irish media “Buzz” reported on May 22, the monkeypox virus is currently spreading rapidly in Europe.  Belgium has now become the first country to impose a mandatory quarantine on monkeypox infections after confirming at least four cases of the infection.  Because the ulcers will subside within three weeks, the authorities require patients to self-isolate for 21 days.

Monkeypox cases have previously been rarely detected outside of Africa, the report said.  The four cases in Belgium may be linked to the Gay Men Festival in Antwerp in early May.  Now, 92 cases have been confirmed in Europe, North America and Australia, with another 28 suspected infections.

It is reported that monkeypox virus was first discovered in a Danish laboratory in 1958. It belongs to the same virus family as smallpox and spreads through close physical contact.  Symptoms are fever, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and a chickenpox-like rash on the hands and face.  The smallpox vaccine is at least 85% effective against monkeypox.
