Bondarev, a senior diplomat at the UN in Geneva, said in an open letter that the war was “bloody, stupid and absolutely unnecessary. In my more than 20 years of diplomatic career, I have experienced many changes in my country’s foreign policy, but I have never felt so ashamed of my country as I did on February 24 of this year.” Bondarev said in a phone interview on Monday.

“Putin is both a war criminal and a dictator.” Bondarev said in an open letter, “The war of aggression against Ukraine initiated by Putin was in fact a war against the West. It was not only a crime against the Ukrainian people, but perhaps it is also the most serious crime against the Russian people, with a capital Z blocking all our hopes and bright prospects for our country to have a free and prosperous society. Bondarev has worked in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2002 and was posted to the United Nations Office in Geneva in 2019.
