The 75th World Health Assembly (WHA) will be held in Geneva, Switzerland from May 22 to 28. Although Taiwan didn’t receive an invitation letter, 13 member states have proposed to invite Taiwan to attend the assembly as an observer. The WHO announced that it may openly discuss Taiwan’s eligibility for participation on the 23rd as soon as possible. Five European countries–Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland–have expressed their welcome to Taiwan’s participation in the WHA.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that Taiwan’s performance has been very positive from donating medical supplies in recent years to  the current humanitarian support for Ukraine and Russia. As the world continues to grapple with the pandemic and other public health threats, it makes no sense to isolate Taiwan from the world’s major public health forums. Taiwan’s complete public health knowledge system, technical capabilities, democratic governance, and robust economy, as well as its resilience during the pandemic, demonstrate that it can provide substantial resources to the WHA, and there is no legitimate reason to exclude Taiwan’s participation.
