Judge Serhiy Agafonov said, Shishimarin had carried out a criminal order from a higher rank and fired several shots into the victim’s head, killing him instantly. “Given that the crime committed is against peace, security, humanity and the international legal order, the court has no room for reduction of this crime.”

Shishimarin, wearing a blue-gray tracksuit, listened to the judge’s statement from a glass box in the courtroom. He showed no emotion as the verdict was read out through an interpreter. He pleaded guilty to the charges in court and asked forgiveness from the victim’s widow.

Mark Ellis, executive director of the International Bar Association, said the verdict was “not surprising” and “it is a bottom-line verdict”

The Ukrainian judge’s verdict states that the soldier carried out the order of his superiors and deliberately killed Ukrainian civilian. The crime was so serious and unforgivable. Legal professionals expect the case to set the standard for the future.
