It is reported on May 24, that Boris Bondarev, the counselor of Russia’s permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, has resigned in protest over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “I have never felt so ashamed of my country,” he said.
In a letter sent by Bondarev to diplomatic missions in Geneva, he said he was ending his 20-year career as a diplomat.
Referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he accused “Putin of waging a war of aggression not only against Ukraine, but more specifically against the entire Western world.” He denounced: “Those who planned this war had only one purpose, to enjoy unlimited powers and immunities, to be in power forever and to live in lavish and pointless palaces, on luxury yachts that cost as much as the entire Russian naval fleet.”
Several diplomats have left Ukraine since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine three months ago, according to diplomats. Yet no diplomat has been as outspoken in criticism as Bondarev, whose resignation has been praised by Western countries and human rights groups.
