Tensions between Beijing and Tokyo are about to escalate.

It has been widely reported that the United States and Japan have prepared a statement calling on both sides to “deter and respond” to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’S aggressive military activities in the Indo-Pacific region.

The statement is expected to be released when U.S. President Joe Biden visits Tokyo early this week and meets with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The White House previously announced that Biden will visit South Korea and Japan from May 20 to May 24.

Nikkei reported, “The statement they will issue after their meeting in Tokyo on Monday (May 23) will also clarify the U.S. determination to defend Japan in the event of being attacked, including the use of nuclear weapons.”

It is the first face-to-face meeting between Biden and Kishida at a critical time in recent years when anti-CCP stance of both countries has been steadily growing.

When Biden met with then Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga last year, they issued a joint statement calling for stability in Taiwan Strait. It is the first time in decades that Taiwan issue has been mentioned in the U.S.-Japan joint statement, which China deems as a provocation.

Biden’s trip to Asia will include a plan to economically counter Communist China, known as the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Government pledged to help Japan’s nascent military and coast guard defend the disputed Senkaku Islands when attacked by Communist China. Biden stressed that the islands fell under Article V of Japan-U.S. Security Treaty, which relates to mutual defense.

Japan recently said it wanted to transform its military from a purely defensive posture (which was mandated by post-World War II constitution) to one capable of offensive operations.
