Canada announced on May 19 that it plans to ban the use of 5G equipment provided by Huawei Technologies and ZTE, both key telecom companies controlled by the CCP. The policy is aimed to protect Canada’s national security and to request the gradual removal of equipment related to the existing 4G network. Unsurprisingly, the Chinese Embassy in Canada expressed strong dissatisfaction.

The decision was made after an extensive and thorough review by Canada’s security agencies and consultation with its closest allies, said Francois-Philipp Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, in a statement released.

Marco Mendicino, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, said that 5G technology has a vital impact on Canada’s present and future homeland and public safety. He said, ““an extensive and thorough security examination of 5G and wireless telecommunications technologies” had to be “carried out meticulously, responsibly, and with all the due diligence that was required in order to protect our national security.”

Canada is one of the members of the Five Eyes Alliance, an intelligence-sharing organization. The rest of the members, which consists of the United States, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, have already banned or restricted Huawei’s participation in 5G networks construction.

According to the source, Canada will also soon introduce a series of plans in different fields such as energy and technology to ensure the future development and security of Canada.
