McDonald’s announced its withdrawal from Russia in the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
McDonald’s said that due to the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it had suspended its business in Russia from March 2022, and announced a complete withdrawal on May 16 to find a local acquirer for the business.
Regarding the withdrawal, Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski said in a statement that the invasion of Ukraine means continued business is “no longer tenable, nor is it consistent with McDonald’s values.”
McDonald’s is looking for a local buyer but would not allow the stores to use its name, logo, and menu. McDonald’s retains its trademark in Russia.
McDonald’s has been operating in Russia for more than 30 years and is expected to lose up to $1.4 billion with the withdrawal.
