According to a news report on May 17th, Saskatchewan police received a report of 76% increase in fuel theft between January and April 2022 as fuel prices rose sharply.

The report said: Out of the 178 reported thefts, 137 occurred at petrol stations. While the motives for these thefts cannot be entirely determined, these crimes have occurred more frequently in the wake of the recent surge in oil prices.

The police said: Owners should strengthen preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of fuel theft. For example, gas stations can adopt a “pay first and then refuel” approach, to prevent customers from escaping unintentionally or intentionally before paying.
