Over the past few days, Russian forces’ ongoing attacks on the villages to the north of Kharkiv, Ukrainian second-largest city, set several buildings in the city on fire. Fortunately, Ukraine’s defense minister and Kharkiv region governor announced on May 16th that after tenacious efforts, Ukrainian troops have succeeded in recovering lost ground in Kharkiv and pushing back Russian forces to the Russia-Ukraine border.

In addition, Ukrainian troops launched a counter-offensive around the military town of Izium, to the southeast of Kharkiv and Russian forces used missiles to fight back. Given that Izium is an important supply depot for the Russian military, they were unlikely to surround the Ukrainian army in Donbas region as planned if defeated once again in Izium. Ukrainian military sources said Russian troops withdrawn from Kharkiv were marching towards Donbas region.

The analysis of an U.S. think tank believed that since Russian military progress in Eastern Ukraine has been significantly slower than expected, it did not exclude the possibility of Moscow abandoning a policy of siege in that region and focusing on the seizure of Luhansk. British military intelligence indicated that Russia has now likely suffered losses of one third of the ground combat force it deployed to Ukraine since February and its offensive in the Donbas region has fallen significantly behind the original schedule.
