According to a report by CTV News on May 12, the Toronto business community jointly urged the federal government to cancel the non-essential quarantine measures implemented at the city’s Pearson International Airport to avoid the long-term customs clearance delays of the current large number of passengers at the airport.
In addition to insufficient staffing, the cumbersome virus testing procedures are the main reasons for the long customs clearance time for inbound passengers, the report said. Passengers are often stranded on planes for hours, waiting for the airport to process the backlog of luggage.
It is reported that more than 100,000 transit passengers experienced severe delays in customs clearance last week, with more than three hours of waiting for immigration clearance. Thanks to a gradual recovery in tourism, Toronto Airport is now handling more than 30,000 international passengers a day, and that number is expected to rise to 45,000 soon.
In response, Toronto Region Board of Trade President and CEO Jan De Silva said that the government must immediately lift all unnecessary quarantine measures in order to fully reopen Canada’s tourism industry.
