The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, said on May 17th, that the ICC had dispatched a professional team to Ukraine to investigate the alleged war crimes of the Russian army.
According to a Liberty Times report, Russia has committed massacres, forced evictions, kidnappings and other atrocities in various places during the nearly three months of its invasion of Ukraine. In this regard, Karim Khan said that the ICC has sent a team of 42 members including investigators, forensic experts and prosecutors to Ukraine on the 17th to conduct on-the-spot investigations. He emphasized that this is the largest field investigation mission of the ICC since its establishment in 2002.
Karim Khan added that the team will actively investigate all crimes under the jurisdiction of the ICC, strengthen evidence and testimony collection, forensic material identification and provide support and assistance to the Ukrainian Government.
On the same day, the U.S. State Department also announced the establishment of a new agency, the Conflict Observatory, to investigate, record and publicize alleged war crimes committed by the Russian military in Ukraine, so that Russia can be held accountable for its horrific actions in the future.
