China has long been an important market for Disney’s various businesses.  However, with several blockbusters produced by Disney’s Marvel Studios, including the latest “Doctor Strange 2,” unable to be released in China, Disney’s CEO recently stated that the absence of a Chinese market will not hinder the success of the film.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently spoke about the difficulty of releasing films in China.  The US entertainment news website reported on May 11th, Chapek said on a financial conference call that the situation in China is “very unstable” and “very complicated” from a business and political point of view.  U.S. film industry executives revealed that the CCP’s censorship problem has especially worsened since 2018.
