According to the Canberra Times on May 8, the U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a further £1.3 billion ($2.26 billion) in military aid to Ukraine, ahead of a video conference by G7 leaders with Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The U.K. government said Johnson’s new pledge almost doubled Britain’s previous spending commitments on Ukraine, which was the highest rate of spending on a conflict since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the extra spending on Ukraine would come from a reserve used by the government for emergencies.

In addition, the U.K. government said on May 7 that they would donate a further 287 mobile generators to Ukraine, which could provide power to hospitals, shelters, and other essential services. As of now, the total number of generators from the U.K. government to Ukraine has reached 856. According to the statement of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, the new generators were enough to power the equivalent of around 8,000 additional homes. Moreover, the U.K. government has also introduced time-limited exemptions to its international fossil fuel support policy, which would allow the U.K. to provide support for Ukraine’s energy and fuel needs. These temporary measures could ensure there was enough fuel for vehicles involved in food production and other basic services in Ukraine and help build up energy reserves ahead of winter.
