Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said that the Canadian government is examining the possibility of joining the U.S’s ballistic missile defense system, nearly 20 years after Canada first declined an invitation to participate, Politico reported May 10th.

Anand said Canada will work closely with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and NATO to strengthen its domestic and continental defenses, given that the current volatile international environment is “less secure, less predictable and more chaotic.”

Canada’s desire to change its defense policy is reportedly driven by the Russian-Ukrainian war. The latest federal budget also earmarked about C$8 billion in fresh military commitments over the next 5 years, including C$500 million of military aid to Ukraine. The defense budget has increased to 1.5% of GDP from 1.36% last year.
