On May 5, the Lithuania-Poland gas pipeline GIPL was officially opened. It marks huge progress in energy independence for European countries that have long relied heavily on Russian gas imports. The pipeline integrates the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland into the EU’s gas transmission system, allowing them to finally have a wide choice of gas suppliers in the open market of continental Europe.
