On May 9th, the Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States (G7), as well as the High Representative of the European Union (EU), released a statement expressing their deep concern over the selection process of the Hong Kong(HK) Chief Executive.

John Lee Ka-Chiu, the candidate of choice of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), was recently elected as HK’s Chief Executive. The CCP and HK authorities increased the number of non-elected members in the Election Committee in 2021, most of whom were directly appointed by the CCP. They also slashed the number of voters eligible for elections. These operations deviated from the ultimate goal of universal suffrage in HK’s Basic Law.

The electoral nomination process and appointments weakened the legal rights of HK people and eroded HK’s autonomy and civil rights. The G7 and the EU called on Communist China to honor the UK-China joint declaration and other legal obligations. They urged the new Chief Executive to respect HK’s protected rights and freedoms specified in HK’s Basic Law and ensure that the court system maintains the rule of law.
