Hong Kong’s new chief executive election was held on the morning of May 8. It is the first single-candidate election in Hong Kong’s history after its election system was revised by the CCP. In the end, John Lee, the former Hong Kong Secretary for Security and the only candidate appointed by the CCP, was endorsed as the next chief executive of Hong Kong.

John Lee has worked in Hong Kong’s security department for decades. In 2019, when John Lee was Hong Kong’s Secretary of Security, he led a brutal crackdown on protesters who were against the extradition regulations under Communist China’s National Security Law. According to Mr. Miles Guo’s revelation, a series of crackdowns on the protesters led to the deaths of over 10,000 Hong Kong people. In addition, John Lee ordered the arrest of Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai which eventually led to the closure of Apple Daily.

John Lee was sanctioned by the United States in 2020 for being involved in coercing, arresting, detaining, or imprisoning individuals under Communist China’s national security law. During the campaign, YouTube blocked his campaign account to comply with U.S. sanction laws. In a 44-page campaign outline released last week, John Lee said his top priority would be to legislate for Article 23 of the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, which prohibits acts of treason, secession, incitement, or subversion against Beijing. But Lee did not say a single word in his outlines about the democratic process in Hong Kong.
