Reuters reports that Japanese Ambassador to the United States Koji Tomita said today that President Biden plans to visit South Korea and Japan from May 20th to the 24th, and is expected to launch the new Indo-Pacific economic architecture during his visit formally.  Speaking at an event at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington think tank, Koji Tomita, said that the U.S. and Japan continue to discuss the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) details, hoping to strike a balance between inclusivity and high standards.  The new Indo-Pacific Economic Framework will see the U.S. and friendly countries working together in-depth on digital trade, supply chains, and green technology.

Achieving Indo-Pacific Strategic Goals

Since the U.S. withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) during the Trump presidency of 2017, it has continued its delay in detailing plans for economic engagement with the Asian region.

Koji Tomita said Biden’s visit to Japan and South Korea during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine was one of the fundamental ways to achieve the Indo-Pacific strategic goals and indicated that the U.S. remains focused on the Indo-Pacific region.  The U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel has said that the Russian-Ukrainian war does not affect Washington’s continued focus on Asia.

Koji Tomita said, “This visit (President Biden) will be a very powerful way of establishing the joint readiness of Japan and the United States to play a leadership role in the broader economic and social development of the Indo-Pacific.”

Quadrilateral Security Dialogue

Japanese officials say Biden will hold a Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) with Japan, Australia, and India in Tokyo during his visit to Japan, which Tomita sees as an important way to achieve the goals of the Indo-Pacific strategy.  The meeting of foreign ministers of the Quad is to reaffirm the long-term focus of Washington’s approach to the Indo-Pacific region when the U.S. is at war with Russia and Ukraine, according to foreign media.
