According to a report by CTV News on May 4, Statistics Canada announced on the same day that Canada’s recent merchandise import and export volume has risen to the highest level in history, and has maintained a trade surplus since the beginning of this year.
The latest figures show Canada’s merchandise trade surplus was C$2.5 billion in March, as imports rose 7.7% to an all-time high of C$61.1 billion. Among them, imports of energy products, especially crude oil and bitumen, increased by 26.3%. Imports of consumer goods and motor vehicles and parts rose by 6.5% and 9.9%, respectively.
Meanwhile, Canada’s total exports rose 6.3% in March to a peak of C$63.6 billion. Of this, exports of energy products rose by about 13% to a record $17.9 billion, driven by higher prices. In addition, exports of automobiles and parts increased by 7.9%. Excluding energy products, Canada’s exports rose 4.0% in March.
