According to media on May 2nd, as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida wrapped up the last leg of a three-nation tour of Southeast Asia, the leaders of Japan and Thailand announced a new defense agreement as well as plans to upgrade their economic relations.
The report mentioned, Thailand had one of the region’s biggest and most equipped armies and a long history of ties with the United States military. The agreement would facilitate the transfer of defense hardware and technology from Japan to Thailand. In the joint statement released alongside Kishida, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said “This will help improve national defense and support investment from Japan in this activity which is an important goal for Thailand,”
The information demonstrates that Southeast Asia has been closely related to Japan for decades, hosting many of its well-known enterprises in different industries, involving infrastructure, engineering, automobile, and electronic product manufacturing. At present, Southeast Asia remains one of the main battlefields between the United States, Japan’s close ally and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Japan’s rival. It is reported that during the three-day visit, Kishida also visited Vietnam and Indonesia where Japanese companies maintained a large presence.
