On May 3rd, German opposition leader Friedrich Merz met with Ukrainian President Zelensky in Kyiv and said that Ukraine’s war against the Russian invader is a fight for freedom and that Germany would fully support it. After touring the bombed-out town of Irpin, Merz said that only by seeing it with one’s own eyes can one truly understand the extent of the tragedy. “It is not just Ukraine that’s being defended here, but also democracy and freedom,” he added. Germany, one of Kyiv’s largest arms suppliers, has been criticized for hesitating before agreeing to send heavy weapons to Kyiv and for its earlier support for the dialogue with Vladimir Putin. This visit of the German opposition leader to Ukraine has increased the pressure on Chancellor Scholz to make an appearance in the Ukrainian capital.
