On Wednesday, May 4, the Financial Times reported that the U.S. Biden administration is considering imposing human rights-related sanctions on Hikvision, the video surveillance company of the Communist Party of China (CCP).
Hikvision has customers in more than 180 countries, and Washington has already begun informing its allies.
If implemented, the sanctions could have dire consequences for the surveillance equipment maker, which was earlier included in a list of companies that threaten U.S. national security.
In March 2021, the Federal Communications Commission designated five companies of THE CCP as threats to U.S. national security under a 2019 law aimed at protecting U.S. communications networks.
The five companies are the CCP’s Hikvision, Huawei Technologies Co., ZTE Corporation, Hydra Communications Corp. and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co.
