On May 5, the Lithuania-Poland gas pipeline GIPL was officially opened. It marks huge progress in energy independence for European countries that have long relied heavily on Russian gas imports. The pipeline integrates the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland into the EU’s gas transmission system, allowing them to finally have a wide choice of gas suppliers in the open market of continental Europe.

The opening ceremony of the GIPL was attended by the Presidents of Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, the European Commissioner for Energy, and the Baltic and Polish Ministers responsible for energy. The President of Lithuania said that energy independence has begun. The Polish President said the opening of the GIPL was the best response to Russia’s threat. The Baltic countries of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland all heavily relied on Russian gas imports. It’s reported that the four countries had already announced that they would stop importing Russian natural gas last month.
