On February 4, the U.S. House passed the “American Competition Act of 2022”.  The bill aimed to increase U.S. competitiveness with Communist China and to promote high-tech research and manufacturing capabilities.  In addition to this bill, a Chip Fund will be created to allocate billions of US dollars to encourage semiconductor production.

The bill also calls on the U.S. Secretary of State to negotiate a name change of the Taiwan office in the United States from “Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office” to “Taiwan Representative Office in the United States.”

Among the 2,900 pages of the bill, there are several Taiwan-related issues, including those to deepen the close relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan, assisting Taiwan in developing asymmetric defense capabilities and strongly supporting Taiwan to participate in the international organization including the World Health Assembly (WHA).

The bill passage by the House set up negotiations with the US Senate on a compromise version of the legislation.  Both the American Innovation and Competition Act together must pass both chambers before it can be sent to the White House for US President Joe Biden to sign.
