On Friday Joseph Clark, the Washington Times, reported; U.S. House speaker Nancy Pelosi urged U.S. Olympic athletes not to speak out against the CCP on Friday, just a few hours after the kick off of the politicalized Beijing Winter Olympics. Pelosi said that she fears for the safety of the U.S. athletes if they were to make any criticism of Beijing.

Lawmakers have increasingly criticized Beijing, especially the CCP’s poor human rights record, including abuses against China’s Uyghur minority. President Biden announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics last December, citing “the CCP’s continued genocide and crimes against humanity, as well as other human rights abuses in Xinjiang.”

For months, Republicans have called for a full boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Last week, Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs Committee called on U.S. Secretary of State Blinken to brief athletes on human rights abuses by the CCP. In a letter to Blinken, the lawmakers said they would be in danger if athletes speak openly about the CCP’s human rights record. Sen. Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, the intelligence committee, said the CCP’s Winter Olympics poses a security risk to athletes and coaches, who could be widely monitored by the CCP and could even be kidnapped. He also raised concerns that the CCP might secretly collect DNA samples from athletes through CCP virus testing, which is consistent with the intelligence obtained.

“We salute the president and support an unanimous diplomatic boycott by other countries,” Pelosi said. She added that she wants American athletes to be “safe in sport, in politics and other aspects.”
