The U.S. Republican lawmakers are urging the Biden Administration to tighten export restrictions on the CCP’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), according to Newsmax’s report on January 31.

The report referred to a letter from Republican senator Tom Cotton and Bill Hagerty to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo that pointed out the SMIC has close ties to the CCP’s military. In the letter, the senators indicate that loosening controls of export loopholes on the related technologies will seriously threaten U.S. national security. Especially at present, when CCP is relying on technologies from the U.S. to push forward its own military modernization programs.

Information revealed that the Trump administration had put SMIC on the sanction list in late 2020. However, due to a procedural error, the sanction only involved export restrictions on highly specialized chipmaking equipment. The CCP, on the other hand, had acquired the special licenses that were worth billions of dollars from other U.S. technology projects. Therefore, the senators are urging the Department of Commence to fix this national-security threatening loophole at soon as possible.
