The White House and British government issued a statement on Jan. 31: The US and UK are prepared to punish Russian elites close to President Vladimir Putin with asset freezes and travel bans if Russia enters Ukraine.
According to a report from Epoch Times, Britain urged Putin to “step back from the brink” after the Russian build-up of troops near Ukraine stoked fears of war and warned any incursion would trigger sanctions against companies and people close to the Kremlin.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said planned legislation will give London new powers to target companies linked to the Russian state.
“The individuals we have identified are in or near the inner circles of the Kremlin and play a role in government decision-making or are at a minimum complicit in the Kremlin’s destabilizing behavior,” White House spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters.
Neither government has disclosed who may be subject to sanctions.
U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Democratic Chairman Bob Menendez and Republican Sen. James Risch said on Jan. 30 that senators are very close to reaching an agreement on legislation to sanction Russia, including some measures that could take effect before any invasion, and they hope to advance the bill this week.
The report says that the U.S. Senate bill would target Russia’s most important banks and Russian sovereign debt with sanctions and provide more military aid to Ukraine. Meanwhile, the EU also threatened that any invasion of Ukraine would in fact impact the Russian economy and leadership.
