On January 27, the European Union said it has filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization over trade restrictions imposed by Communist China on Lithuania, a member of the European Union. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said on the same day that the United States will join the WTO negotiations in solidarity with Lithuania and the EU.

The EU accused the CCP of implementing discriminatory trade practices against Lithuania, and said the integrity of the EU single market was threatened.

The EU said that the CCP’s trade restrictions on Lithuania include customs refusal to clear Lithuanian goods, refusal of Lithuanian import applications, and putting pressure on EU companies.  It is required that their exports to China not to contain Lithuanian components.

The U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, spoke with Lithuania’s Foreign Minister earlier this year, saying that Lithuania could receive support by the U.S. in this diplomatic dispute, and the two countries will work together to deal with the CCP’s economic coercion.
