On January 27th, the FCC, again due to national security issues, voted unanimously 4 to 0 to revoke China Unicom’s service authorization in the United States. This also requires Americas Operations Ltd. to cease any domestic and international operations in the United States within 60 days of the order.
The FCC said the national security environment regarding China had changed since the FCC authorized it 20 years ago. Both China Unicom’s Americas subsidiary and its parent company on the mainland had the opportunity for the Chinese government to access, store, disrupt, and mislead U.S. communications. It also pointed out that Unicom’s behavior lacked candor, credibility, and reliability, and did not meet the basic level of trust required by the FCC.
After the FCC voted against China Mobile’s service authorization in the United States in May 2019, and the China Telecom service authorization was revoked in October 2021, China Unicom’s license has now been revoked. So for now, the three major telecommunications operators of the Chinese Communist Party are completely out of the United States.
