China has agreed to allow the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) to visit Xinjiang in the first half of 2022 after the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, according to foreign media reports on January 27th.
Rights groups have accused China of widescale abuses against Uyghurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang, including mass detention, torture and forced labour, the outlet said. The Commissioner has been pursuing negotiations with China for a visit to the region since September 2018.
But the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has consistently denied all allegations of abuses to Uighurs and other minority groups, and has not allowed the Rights groups to visit Xinjiang.
According to relevant sources, the approval for a visit after the conclusion of the Beijing Winter Games, was granted on the condition the trip should be “friendly” and not framed as an investigation. There has been no response from the Rights groups.
In this regard, relevant analysts believe that this is obviously a false political game played by the CCP under enormous pressure. The pressure is that the United States issued the “authorized evacuation” of the US embassy in Beijing and have suppressed the Winter Olympics. The CCP figures to cooperate with the United Nations human rights organization, and to perform a political show in Xinjiang to ease international pressure.
