In an interview with a U.S. radio station on Friday January 28, Qin Gang, the Communist China ambassador to the United States, said if the United States encourages Taiwan’s independence, China and the United States could come into military conflict.  Communist China regards democratic Taiwan as a “sacred and inalienable” part of its territory, and has never renounced its plan for reunification.

Qin Gang said, “let me emphasize that the Taiwan issue is the largest powder keg between China and the United States.  If the Taiwan authorities continue on the path of Taiwan independence with the instigation of the United States, the two major powers, China and the United States, are likely to be involved in a military conflict.”

When requested for comment, the U.S. Department stated that the United States remains committed to the “One China” policy and its commitments made in the U.S. Taiwan Relations Act.

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Defense said, “We will continue to assist Taiwan in maintaining adequate self-defense capabilities, while maintaining our own ability to resist any use of force that may endanger the people of Taiwan.”
