On January 28, the Taiwan Vice President Lai Ching-te met with the U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in the inauguration ceremony of the Honduras President. They exchanged pleasantries and had a brief conversation for about twenty to thirty seconds. It is understood that Lai thanked Harris for the support of the United States for Taiwan. When Harris delivered a speech on the stage, she also paid a special tribute to Lai.

Some analysts pointed out that at this sensitive time of the Sino-U.S. relations, Lai and Harris exchanged greetings at the Honduras Presidential Inauguration. It was the first time that the two interacted naturally on an international occasion. It is regarded as a major diplomatic breakthrough of the U.S-Taiwan relationship.
