According to a report by Deutsche Welle News in Chinese on January 28, 243 NGOs worldwide have called for a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics as the games are about to begin.
The 243 organizations worldwide issued a joint statement on Jan. 27 saying, “The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will open amid atrocities and other grave human rights violations by the Chinese government.”
These organizations called on governments to join the diplomatic boycott and urged athletes and sponsors not to legitimize the Chinese government’s human rights abuses.
The statement noted that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the Chinese (Communist) state has carried out massive persecution of Uighurs, Tibetans, ethnic minorities and religious believers from various independent religious groups. In addition, the oppression of human rights activists, feminists, lawyers, journalists and others has led to the disappearance of an independent civil society.
Moreover, the Chinese Communist Party has violated international law by dismantling Hong Kong’s once vibrant civil society, expanding technological surveillance, drastically denying the rights of expression, association and peaceful assembly, and allowing the use of forced labor.
So far, countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia have announced a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics.
