Reuters reported on Jan. 21 that British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, on a visit to Australia on Friday, warned the heads of China and Russia that Britain and its allies would unite to fight for democracy against authoritarian government dictatorships, saying that the current period of authoritarian dictatorships was the most arrogant period in terms of attitude since the Cold War.
The UK and its allies in the free world must join forces to tackle global threats, deepen relations with Indo-Pacific democracies and deter global aggressors who do what they want with their economic influence over others, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said at the Australia-UK Ministerial Consultation (AUKMIN) in Sydney today.
British and Australian ministers issued a joint statement expressing concern over Russia’s troop increase on the Ukrainian border and saying that both countries absolutely support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
At the meeting, the two sides also discussed matters related to Australia’s purchase of nuclear submarines from the UK and signed an agreement to fund infrastructure in the region to counteract the influence of the CCP government.
Truss said democracies must stand firm and said China’s economic coercion of Australia was a warning to Britain.
Later, in a speech at the Lowy Institute, an Australian foreign policy think tank, Truss warned Putin against making a major strategic mistake by advancing and withdrawing troops from Ukraine. Britain must work with allies such as Australia, Israel, India, Japan and Indonesia to deter global aggressors, especially in the Pacific.
