Recently, reports show the transmission speed of Omicron, the new variant of COVID-19, ranks the highest among all other variants currently found in New York City causing the hospital staffing have been under lots of pressure due to quarantine guidelines and infection rate.

The New York State Department of Health issued an update of the pediatric COVID-19 special report on Jan. 14th. The report contains information from 3 statewide New York State databases which are Electronic Clinical Laboratory Reporting System (ECLRS), Health Electronic Response Data System (HERDS), New York State Immunization Information System(NYSIIS)and the Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR) have been used for ongoing public reporting and analyses since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report summarizes Omicron’s preliminary findings on the severity and relevance of the infections surging in New York City in terms of monitoring trends, assessing outbreak severity, and hospital capacity.

The report noted that Omicron was spreading extremely rapidly in New York City and becoming the dominant variant of the virus in New York City within five weeks of being first detected, in contrast to Delta took 20 weeks to become the main variant at the time.

According to the report, between January 3rd to 9th, 2022, on average, about one in nine infected patients was admitted to the intensive care unit, and about 45% of the patients required ventilators, but at the peak of the epidemic last winter during the period from February 6th to 13th, nearly one-fifth of hospitalized patients infected with the virus were admitted to intensive care units, of which up to 70% required ventilators.

Although the total number of patients hospitalized is stable under the ravages of Omicron, there is still a general shortage of personnel in the medical department of New York City, and the new variant virus Omicron is causing a huge impact on hospital operations.
