The AFP (L’Agence France-Presse) reported that by September 5, two Canadians, Kang Mingkai (Michael Kovrig) and Michael Spaffer (Michael Spavor), have been detained by the Chinese Communist Party for 1,000 days. Hundreds of people demonstrated in Ottawa, condemning the CCP’s “unjust” detention. In Brussels, New York, Washington, Seoul, Singapore, and other places the “7000 Steps for Freedom” movement was also held in solidarity for these two Canadians.

Vina Nadjibulla, the wife of Kang Mingkai, speaking at the rally, said her husband walks 7,000 steps in his cell every day, reading, singing, or praying while he walks. The 7000 steps symbolize his courage and faith. Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau and the U.S. Ambassador to Canada also participated in the demonstration.

In December 2018, Canada detained Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei, in response to an extradition request from the United States. Almost at the same time, the CCP detained two Canadians in retaliation. Among them, Mike Spaffer, who has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, and Michael Kovrig (Kang MingKai), who is still awaiting sentencing.
