On September 1st 2021, this letter to the Editor, titled Resurgence of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Highly Vaccinated Health System Workforce, was published in the New English Journal of Medicine, one of the top, prestigious, high-impact clinical medical journals in the world.

This paper reported on the vaccination and COVID infection of ~19,000 health care workers working in the University of California San Diego Health, from March to July 2021. When the study began in March, 76.3% of the workers had already been fully vaccinated. By the end of July, the percentage of fully-vaccinated workers had increased to 83.1%. The data showed that among 125 symptomatic PCR-tested positive workers, 75.2% were fully vaccinated. In addition, the mRNA-based vaccine effectiveness dropped from 93.9% in March to 65.5% in July.

Interestingly, the percentage (75%) of all COVID positive cases of the fully-vaccinated identified in this article is comparable to the percentage (74%) of those published earlier from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Ref. 2).

What was missing from this study was 1. the incidence of adverse effects from mRNA-based vaccines, and 2. the information concerning the hospitalization of these “symptomatic” patients, including the comparison of the days of hospitalization and severity of disease between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.

The acute phase that we are living in now is only the beginning. There is a growing number of adverse events resulting from the mRNA-based vaccines. According to the US’s Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (https://www.openvaers.com/covid-data) on August 20th, there have been 55,821 hospitalizations and 13,627 deaths reported. The long-term harms of COVID vaccines remain uncertain.

Health workers are at the frontline of our medical system in the COVID battlefield.  We need to protect them urgently. With the increase of vaccine-related side-effects and the dramatic reduction in vaccine effectiveness, the health authorities and the government need to reconsider the experimental vaccine program, if not to stop it right away.
