United States federal law requires that an official count of the population, called the Census, must occur every ten years. The most recent count was completed in 2020.  The results of this population accounting is used by the federal government for a number of purposes. One of the most important purposes is to determine the number of U.S. Representatives in the House of Representatives allocated to each state.  The United States House of Representatives is a critical part of the federal government and it includes 435 members in total.  That number is determined by the U.S. Constitution and each state is represented based upon its relative population.

In the last fifty or so years, there has been a general migration to the southern and western parts of the United States.  In recent years, there have been many articles documenting the migration of people from “Blue” states to “Red” states.  “Blue” states are states generally run by politicians from the Democrat party and “Red” states are those generally run by politicians from the Republican party.

While there are many reasons people move from one part of the country to another, many of these articles pointed out that one of the most significant reasons is the frustration people have with Democrat politicians enacting policies which restrict their freedoms and confiscate a greater portion of their assets through higher taxation.  This phenomenon has been exacerbated by government’s reactions to the pandemic in many parts of the country.

One of the results of the recent census, which showed several “Blue” states losing population and several “Red” states gaining population is a shift in their respective representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.  In general, Democrat run states like California and New York are losing seats, and Republican run states like Texas and Florida are gaining seats.  Over time, this could make it more difficult for Democrats to gain or hold political power in the House of Representatives.

As I mentioned above, this is not necessarily a new phenomenon, but this will likely have some real repercussions on the U.S. political landscape. There is an old saying that “people vote with their feet”. Watching the shift in population certainly confirms that this statement continues to be true.
